Mary Jane Dodd
Mary Jane Dodd, age 92, went to be with her Heavenly Father early Friday morning, November 12, 2010, at the Minneola District Hospital, Minneola, Kansas.
She was born May 14, 1918, in her parents’ home of Wilburn Township, rural Fowler, the daughter of Lester A. and Mabel M. (Lutz) Wakeman. As a young girl, she attended the Fowler and Dodge City School Systems.
During WWII she worked at the Liberal Kansas Air Base, packing parachutes for the war effort. Later she helped run the old gas station in Fowler.
On June 18, 1944, she married Ernest J. Dodd at her parents home in rural Fowler, Kansas. After their marriage the couple made their home on their farm in rural Fowler, in Ford County. She was an active farmer’s wife and also worked as a nurse’s aide at the Minneola District Hospital.
She was a member of the Untied Methodist Church of Fowler. She and Ernie enjoyed traveling to Texas and camping during the winter months for many years. She also enjoyed bird watching, playing cards and board games, and attending to her flowers.
She is survived by her daughters Sandra Kay Norman and husband Mike of Fowler, Kansas, and Betty Jane Pittman and husband Ken of Mansfield, Texas; five grandchildren, Missy Blackburn and husband Walter of Fowler, Shannon Schneller of Overland Park, Angie Bartula and husband Marty of Dallas, Texas, Jared Pittman of Columbia, Missouri, and Joshua Norman of Wichita, Kansas; five great-grandchildren, Zackary, AnnaMarie, Sophia, & Michelle Schneller of Overland Park, and Wade Blackburn of Fowler; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Dodd on Janurary 4, 1986; her parents; and two brothers, Leslie E. Wakeman and Everal M. Wakeman.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2010, at the Fowler United Methodist Church, Fowler, with the Reverend Dick Robbins presiding. Interment was in the Fowler Cemetery, Fowler.
The family would welcome memorials to the Minneola District Hospital and the Fowler Nursing Home in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.
