Phyllis Boyd Elrod
Phyllis Elrod, 80, passed away August 8, 2010 at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services were held at the West Side Christian Church in Wichita, Kansas
Phyllis C. Boyd was born in Garden City, Kansas on April 7, 1930 to Kenneth and Opal Boyd. The oldest of 4 children, Phyllis grew up on the family farm outside Fowler, Kansas. She graduated from the Fowler High School and then graduated from nursing school in Halstead, KS. She retired from the St Joseph Medical Center in Wichita in 1995.
Phyllis and Bernie met on a blind date that was arranged by friends that thought it was comical to set up two red-heads together. Neither of them had dated red-heads before but their plan was a success because Phyllis and Bernie were married February 10, 1952 in the Fowler Friends Church. Four children were born to this union. Phyllis was remembered and known for her kindness and patience to all she met. She loved camping trips, Good Samaritan Samborees, Hobby club, card and game playing and she especially enjoyed quilting and sharing her quilted gifts with others. She was a two time breast cancer survivor, a certified clown, and an officer in a special Good Samaritan camping group called Second Chance Sams for anyone given a second chance in life.
She is survived by her husband, Bernie Elrod; daughters, Cynthia (Garvin) DeShazer of Tempe, AZ, Kendra (Rod) McBroom of Goddard and Kandis (Terry) Pankratz of Hillsboro; son, Dale (Vera) Elrod of Wichita; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lyle (Glennis) Boyd of Oakley, Kansas and Loyle (Jan) Body of Akron, Iowa; an aunt Betty Leakey of Fowler, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, VaLyta Lauppe.
Memorials have been established with Victory in the Valley and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
