John Thurman Homer, Jr.
John Thurman Homer, Jr., age 84, died early Saturday morning, November 13, 2010, at the Fowler Residential Care Center, Fowler, Kansas.
He was born June 27, 1926, at Lockney, Texas, the son of John Thurman and Grace (Morris) Homer.  As a young boy he attended school in Herford, Texas.  He later entered into the United States Army, serving during 1943-1945.
On February 2, 1945, he married Lorraine C. Callahan at Alexandria, Louisiana.  After their marriage the couple moved to Fowler, Kansas, before moving to Meade in 1946.  John was the owner and operator of Homer’s Barber Shop, operating for over 47 years, and owner of the Homer Variety Store, both of Meade.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion, Lions Club, and the Meade Golf Club.  He enjoyed golfing, hunting, baseball, and football.  He was a former little league coach, having coached the youth of Meade for thirteen years.
He is survived by: His wife, Lorraine Homer of Meade, Kansas; Three sons, John Homer, III and wife Dixie of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Bob Homer and wife Jane of Johnson City, Kansas and Jim Homer and wife Barbara of Houston, Texas; A sister, Louise Swart of Lubbock, Texas; Four grandchildren, John Homer IV, Robert Homer, Jr, Bradley Neil Homer, and Brandon Scott Homer; and Seven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Homer on September 26, 1992; his parents; and a sister, Joyce Dodson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Meade, with the Reverend Gordon Paulsen presiding. Interment will be in the Fowler Cemetery, Fowler.
The family would welcome memorials to the Fowler Residential Care Center or the Alzheimers Association in care of Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade.
