Allen E. Lubbers
Allen E. Lubbers, age 85, died Sunday morning, August 22, 2010, at the Kansas Medical Center, Andover, Kansas.
He was born May 21, 1925, at Ensign, Kansas, the son of Ike and Alice (Workman) Lubbers. As a young boy he attended the Ensign school system, graduating from Ensign High School in 1943. Upon his graduation, he joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, serving for four years.
On August 14, 1954, he married Doris Davis at the Presbyterian Church in Kingsdown, Kansas. Later in 1955, the couple moved to Plains where he began his tenure with the Bunge Corporation. In 1987, after thirty years of service to Bunge, he retired as the manager. After retirement the couple enjoyed traveling, spending the winters in Bullhead City, Arizona, and returning to Plains in the summer and fall. During his time home in Plains, he assisted area farmers and Reiss Farm Equipment with the summer and fall harvest by driving a semi.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Plains; the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Dodge City; American Legion, Plains; a former member of the Moose Lodge; and was a scout leader for many years. During his years with the Boy Scouts, he received his Eagle Scout, served on the Boy Scout Council; attended the National Jamboree; and transported many area scouts to camp in Colorado. He enjoyed repairing televisions, electronic equipment, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by: His wife, Doris Lubbers of Plains, Kansas; His children, Gilford Lubbers and wife Marta of Dripping Springs, Texas, Paula Lubbers of Meade, Kansas, Karla Short and husband Bill of Bella Vista, Arkansas; A brother, Ben Lubbers of Evergreen, Colorado; Two sisters, Martha Loewe of Yakama, Washington, Dorothy Holsten of Enid, Oklahoma; 8 Grandchildren and 14 Great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a son, Michael Lubbers on March 17, 2009; a brother, Donald Lubbers in September, 2007; and a sister, Mary Ann O’Connell.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, Plains with the Reverend Neal Foster presiding. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Interment will follow in the Plains Cemetery, Plains.
