Marilyn St. Lawrence Baker
Marilyn St. Lawrence Baker died shortly after noon on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the age of 84 at her residence in Lafayette, Louisiana. She went peacefully, attended by her two daughters.
Born in Fowler, Kansas and resident of Jackson, Mississippi for 40 years, she is survived by her sister, Jeanne Hickok of Fowler, Kansas; two daughters and two son-in-laws, Diane K. Baker and Richard Day of Lafayette, Louisiana and Barbara and Doug Hurt of Midlothian, Virginia; one son and daughter-in law, Bryan Baker and Burnet Oliveros of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, W. J. Bryan Baker; two sisters, Evelyn Newton and Connie Rossillon; and one brother, James H. (Mick) St. Lawrence.
After graduating as the valedictorian from her high school in Fowler, Kansas, Marilyn went on to Kansas State Teacher’s College. She majored in General Sciences and received teaching certification. While in college, she met her husband, W. J. Bryan Baker, who was stationed in Emporia, Kansas, in the WWII Army Air Corps. They were married in 1945 and lived for many years in Ft. Worth, Texas. In 1965 the Bakers moved to Jackson, Mississippi where they had many friends and got spiritual support at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
Marilyn was a smart, talented, energetic, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, always busy gardening, cooking or sewing. A gifted seamstress all her life, she continued to develop as an artist after her children left home by designing, creating and giving away dozens of beautiful quilts and wall hangings to friends and family.
A memorial service will be held in July 2009 in her hometown of Fowler, Kansas.
