Vera M. Cordes
Vera M. Cordes, 78, of Kearney died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.  Funeral services were at 11:30 AM, Saturday, August 23rd at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney. The Rev. James DeLoach officiated.  A private family burial was held prior to the services at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Memorials are suggested to the church. She was born September 2, 1929 in Denver, CO to Burton and Lena Wyvette (Lockwood) Kenton.  She moved to rural Gibbon at age 4 and attended rural Gibbon schools through the 8th grade.  She graduated from Kearney High School (Longfellow High) in May of 1947.  In August 1948, she married James Davis, Sr. They were divorced in October 1975.  She lived in Roswell, NM from October 1948 until moving to Guymon, OK in February 1969.  She was employed by Guymon Public Schools from August 1969 until June 30, 1992.  She retired after 29 years of service.  She married Chester L. Cordes on May 9, 1992 in Meade, KS.  She lived in rural Meade until moving to Kearney in June 2006.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney.  She enjoyed bowling, square dancing and the Red Hat Grannies in Liberal, KS.
Survivors include sons, James Davis, Jr. of Gowery, IA, and Jeffrey Davis of Elm Creek; brothers, Jim Kenton of Minden, Jerry Kenton of Palm Desert, CA and Don Kenton of Minden; sisters, Lorraine Reed of Centralia, MO and Lelia Guest of Castor, LA; grandchildren, Bonnie McGregor, Shana Loomis, Tobey Altwine, Paul Loomis, Jessica Davis, Courtney Roland, Tess Hale, Jennifer, and Erica; great-grandchildren, Luke McGregor, Tristan McGregor, Chase Wright, Jadie York, Devon Altwine, Trevor Altwine, Seth Altwine, Kayla Loomis, Davis Loomis and Alyssa Davis; and great-great-grandchild, Dominique McGregor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chester in November 2005, daughter Pamela Loomis, and sister Betty Geiger.
